BIOGRAFIA

Jimi Hendrix (nascido Johnny Allen Hendrix, mais tarde James Marshall Hendrix; Seattle, 27 de novembro de 1942 — Londres, 18 de setembro de 1970) foi um guitarrista, cantor, compositor e produtor norte-americano, amplamente considerado um dos mais importantes guitarristas da história do rock.

Como guitarrista, ele se inspirou nas inovações de músicos do blues, tais como B. B. King, Albert King e T-Bone Walker, assim como nos guitarristas de R&B (rhythm and blues), tais como Curtis Mayfield. Jimi Hendrix é considerado por muitos como: o melhor e mais influente guitarrista de todos os tempos. Ademais, ele ampliou a tradição da guitarra no rock, apesar de guitarristas anteriores, como Dave Davies (de The Kinks), e Pete Townshend (de The Who) terem empregado recursos como o “feedback” (microfonia), distorção e outros efeitos especiais.

Já Hendrix, graças às suas raízes no blues, na soul-music e no R&B, foi capaz de usar estes recursos de uma forma que transcendia suas fontes. Ele também foi um letrista cujas composições foram tocadas por inúmeros artistas. Como produtor musical, foi um dos primeiros a usar o estúdio de gravação como extensão das suas ideias musicais. Assim, a sua importância como estrela do rock coloca-o ao nível de figuras como Chuck Berry, John Lennon Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan e Mick Jagger.

Nascido em Seattle, Washington, Hendrix cresceu tímido e sensível, tendo de ser o responsável por cuidar de seu irmão mais novo, Leon Hendrix, profundamente afetado por problemas familiares, tais como o divórcio dos seus pais em 1951 e a morte de sua mãe em 1958, quando ele tinha apenas 16 anos. Era muito afeiçoado à sua avó materna, que possuía sangue cherokee, e que incutiu no jovem Jimi um forte sentido de orgulho de seus ancestrais nativos norte-americanos. No mesmo ano, o seu pai, chamado Al Hendrix, deu-lhe um ukelele (instrumento de 4 cordas, introduzido no Havaí pelos portugueses no século XVII), e posteriormente comprou, por apenas US$ 5 dólares, uma guitarra acústica, pondo-o no caminho da sua futura vocação.Depois de tocar com várias bandas locais de Seattle, Hendrix alistou-se ao exército, juntando-se à 101-a Divisão Aerotransportada (101st Airborne Division) baseada em Fort Campbell, Kentucky, a 80 km da cidade de Nashville, no Tennessee, como pára-quedista. Ali ele serviu por menos de 1 ano e recebeu dispensa médica após fraturar o tornozelo em um salto. Mais tarde ele diria que o som do ar assobiando no pára-quedas era uma das fontes de inspiração para o seu som “espacial” na guitarra.

Não há nenhum registo médico no exército americano sobre a dispensa de Hendrix. Em 2005, Charles Cross, que foi autor da biografia do líder do Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, publicou no seu livro “Room Full of Mirrors”, que o guitarrista alegou estar apaixonado por um dos seus colegas do seu agrupamento, numa visita ao serviço psiquiátrico em 1962, em Fort Campbell (Estado do Kentucky). Aquilo era mentira, segundo Cross, que relata a preferência do músico por mulheres. “Ele queria apenas escapar do exército para se dedicar à música.”

Hendrix, que se alistou como voluntário para a guerra do Vietnã, nunca esteve em combate, porém as suas gravações tornaram-se as favoritas entre os soldados que lá lutavam. Inicialmente levou uma vida precária tocando em bandas de apoio a músicos de soul e blues como Curtis Knight, B. B. King, e Little Richard em 1965. Sua primeira aparição destacada foi com os Isley Brothers, principalmente no “Testify” em 1964.
