BIOGRAFIA

REO Speedwagon é o nome dado a um motor super possante e usado em um caminhão de alta velocidade, e Neal Doughty e Alan Gratzer formou a banda em 1968. O Produtor Irving Azoff, quem mais tarde trabalharia com Eagles e Steely Dan, trouxe o grupo para debaixo de sua asa e arrumou algumas datas de aberturas de shows. REO Speedwagon não foi a mais talentosa banda de rock dos anos 70, mas eles foram certamente a que trabalharam mais duro que qualquer banda do mesmo circuito. Em 1971, eles lançaram seu primeiro Álbum de hard rock, na qual não obteve muito sucesso. Em 1972, o vocalista Kevin Cronin parte para sua carreira solo de vida curta.

O vocalista Michael Murphy pegou o microfone temporariamente por três álbuns, até que Cronin trouxe sua voz e suas composições de volta ao REO Speedwagon. Eles não obtiveram nenhum sucesso estonteante até 1974 com Ridin’ The Storm Out. Esse álbum foi gravado com Michael Murphy pois Kevin Cronin só voltaria pra banda em 1975. O primeiro album lançado após Cronin se juntar novamente à banda fez um moderável sucesso. A partir do lançamento do You Get What You Play For And You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can’t Tuna Fish ajudou a virar a curva e ajustar a diferença que faltava em seu estilo. Riffs de rock e refrões pop ganchudos definiu o primeiro single de sucesso da banda, Roll With The Changes, do Tuna album, como é chamado esse disco de extenso nome.

Em 1977 eles lançam um disco ao vivo REO Speedwagon Live/You Get What You Play For e começaram a era de discos platinados, culminando em 1980 com o álbum Hi-Infidelity. O álbum esgotou com sete milhões de cópias vendidas somente na América e subiu para o #1 na Billboard com a ajuda de quatro singles top 40: Keep On Lovin’ You (que toca até hoje nas rádios de todo o mundo) e Take It On The Run, bem como Don’t Let Him Go e In Your Letter. Good Trouble de 1982 continua no Top 10 com o single Keep The Fire Burnin’. Mas foi com o Wheels Are Turnin’ que a banda ganhou um status de duplo planinado e o #1 com a canção Can’t Fight This Feeling.

Infelizmente o REO Speedwagon nunca mais venderam uma fração tão considerável de álbuns e nem colocaram sequer mais um hit nas paradas de sucessos desde o maravilhoso álbum Hi-Infidelity, mas para o deleite de seus ardorosos fãs, esteve sempre lançando albuns sem parar nos anos 90, quando o poderoso guitarrista Gary Richrath e o baterista Gratzer deixaram a banda.
