BIOGRAFIA

O ano era 1971. Insatisfeito ao lado do grupo de Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie (teclado e vocal) resolve deixar a banda do guitarrista latino. Pouco tempo depois, seu ex-parceiro de banda Neal Schon (guitarra) toma a mesma decisão.
Nesse momento, aparece a figura de Walter “Herbie” Herbert. Empresário de Carlos Santana, Herbert havia se tornado muito amigo de Schon, e sugere ao guitarrista formar uma nova banda. O empresário convida George Tickner (guitarra), Prairie Prince (bateria) Ross Valory (baixo) para o grupo.
Para o posto de vocalista, Gregg Rolie foi lembrado e aceitou participar do novo projeto. Estava formado em São Francisco o grupo Golden Gate Rhythm Section. Após a gravação de algumas ‘demos-tapes’, a banda resolve mudar de nome. Nascia assim, em 1973, o Journey.
Prince resolve deixar o posto de baterista antes mesmo do primeiro registro do grupo. Em seu lugar, foi chamado Aynsley Dunbar, que participou das gravações de “Journey”, lançado em 1975 pela Columbia Records. Musicalmente, o álbum contém influências de rock, jazz e toques progressivos. Essas características também são comuns aos dois álbuns seguintes, “Look Into the Future” e “Next” – uma fase em que o Journey se reduziu a um quarteto, com a saída de Tickner.
Com vendagens apenas medianas, a banda fez novas alterações em seu ‘line-up’. O vocalista Robert Fleischman chegou a ser contratado, mas durou pouco tempo na banda, tendo gravado apenas a música “For You”, lançada unicamente no ‘box-set’ “Time 3”. Para seu lugar, fora chamado Steve Perry, que gravou em 1978 seu primeiro álbum ao lado do Journey, “Infinity” – o último com Aynsley Dunbar na bateria. O novo disco contava com uma sonoridade diferente dos álbuns passados, mais acessível, melódico e menos experimental.
O sucesso comercial foi crescente. “Evolution”, com Steve Smith no posto de baterista, foi impulsionado pelo bem-sucedido ‘single’ Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin. Da mesma forma, foram lançados “Departure” e o ao vivo “Captured”, ambos com ótimas vendagens. Desgastado pelas freqüentes turnês, Rolie sai da banda, dando lugar ao tecladista Jonathan Cain.
O ápice da carreira do Journey veio em 1981, com o lançamento de “Escape”. Recheado de ‘hits’, o álbum chegou ao primeiro lugar nos ‘charts’ americanos, uma posição acima de seu sucessor, o também multi-platinado “Frontiers”.
Mais mudanças na formação: Ross Valory e Steve Smith deixam a banda antes das gravações de “Raised on Radio”, de 1986. Mesmo com o sucesso do álbum, Perry, que havia assumido o controle do grupo, decide dar fim às atividades do Journey.
Após um hiato de 10 anos, o Journey volta à ativa com Steve Perry, Nean Schon, Jonathan Cain, Steve Smith e Ross Valory, com o lançamento de “Trial By Fire”. Perry, por motivos de saúde, foi substituído por Steve Augeri para a turnê do disco. Outra mudança na formação foi a entrada do baterista Deen Castronovo no lugar de Smith.
Com esse ‘line-up’, o Journey lançou até o momento “Arrival” e “Generations”, de 2001 e 2005, respectivamente, e o EP “Red 13”, de 2002. Em 2008 lançaram o álbum Revelation.
